This reminds me of the old joke about paranoia. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're really not out to get you. Just because our government lies and twists public perception toward their hidden goals in the Middle East doesn't demonstrate that the region isn't critical to national and global security.
Our former Fed chairman had some very interesting comments on Iraq recently. They're re-running the Greenspan interview with the bimbo on CNBC ad infinitum. I had to see that comment about "Fedspeak" one more time. He explains the purpose of his obfuscation (his words) is to distract unsophisticated politicians and citizens from "questions that can't be answered."
No comment, and I refuse to answer are answers.
So, Greenspan habitually lays out a barrage of circuitous, tautological, redundant, polysyllabic nonsequiturs sufficient to glaze over everyone's eyes and convince them that he's far more intellectual than anyone who might dare criticize or question his current and future policy. Greenspans job is to keep Congress "on board" whilst the banks do their thang. Next question please.
The President's job IN HIS VIEW is to likewise sell military policy to the Great Unwashed and their reps in Congress with analogous deceptive rhetoric. Rather than trying to confuse and impress his audience with nuance beyond their collective intelligence the case is made on such a fundamental and primitive level that there can be no counter argument that makes sense. We claim we are fighting to defend peace, freedom and democratic principle when virtually everyone with an IQ over 50 knows we're defending the world's oil supplies. Opinion polls are pretty meaningless when 99% of the voters go out and do what their told every 2,4 and 6 years. That's what counts.
