"Broken Rites Australia has prompted the Catholic Church to apologise to a Queensland woman who was sexually assaulted by a prominent priest when she was a schoolgirl in the early 1970s.
The woman, "Kate" (not her real name), was born in 1960. After hearing about Broken Rites, she rang us in December 1993 to report that she was sexually penetrated on several occasions by Father Dominic Fitzmaurice while she was a pupil, aged 12, in Grade 7 at St Martin de Porres girls' primary school, which was attached to Our Lady of Graces parish in Carina, south-east Brisbane.
Fitzmaurice was a senior priest in the Dominican Fathers (also known as the Order of Preachers), which staffed the Carina parish on behalf of the Brisbane archdiocese.
Like many victims, Kate was forced to remain silent about the sexual abuse while it was happening to her. Her school discouraged Father Fitzmaurice's victims from telling their parents about what the priest was doing."
"A prominent Australian bishop has admitted that Christmas collection money was diverted to lawyers to defend a priest in a child-abuse court case. In addition, the priest's lawyers were paid thousands of dollars from other church sources.
The priest, Father James Patrick Fletcher, of the Maitland-Newcastle diocese in New South Wales, pleaded not guilty in 2004 to multiple counts of anal and oral sexual penetration of an altar boy, Desmond. The offences began in 1990, when Desmond was 13. A jury found Fletcher guilty on all charges.
Legal experts said that Fletcher's legal costs for the 11-day trial exceeded $200,000. The church's defence team included an expensive Queen's Counsel, plus a second barrister and a solicitor.
After the guilty verdict, the media questioned Fletcher's superior (the Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle, Most Reverend Michael Malone) about aspects of the case, including how the defence team was financed. Malone said that Fletcher "availed" himself of an "offered loan facility" to help fund his defence. It is not known how the "loan" was supposed to be "re-paid", especially seeing that Fletcher was about to be jailed for the crimes. It is not known why Bishop Malone called this payment a "loan"."
Victoria's Ombudsman is investigating the alleged mishandling of police inquiries into child sexual abuse, including claims of corrupt police behaviour.
One of seven specific allegations under investigation relates to a 1992-1993 police inquiry.
It is claimed that police inadequately investigated pedophile activity in which police were allegedly implicated, and that a video implicating police, in the possession of a detective, was lost.
But the Ombudsman's internal investigation, which has been running for two years, has itself been plagued by problems.
These include delays and the need to remove one police Ethical Standards Department investigator after he failed to pass on crucial information from two witnesses who alleged possible police involvement in an organised pedophile and child pornography ring.

A prominent psychiatrist claims that sexual harassment and abuse is widespread within immigration detention centres and has called on authorities to investigate.
An independent investigation is already under way into claims that detainees have been sexually assaulted by guards and male detainees at Sydney's Villawood detention centre.
Psychiatrist Louise Newman, who heads the Alliance of Health Professionals for Asylum Seekers, says there is a culture of abuse and voyeurism within the system, especially at Baxter detention centre in South Australia.
"I interviewed an adolescent girl who'd been subjected to ongoing sexual harassment for a fairly significant period of time," she said."
