I purposely left that part out.
the Foxboro Medics were treating a cardiac patient in the parking lot. As the story goes, a drunken fan walked up and started urinating on the Medics and the patient. Several Massachusetts State Troopers and Foxboro Police Officers, absolutely bundled the suspect prior to arresting him.
I was too stunned when I read about that the next day. I may be wrong about the gunfire but I could swear someone was wounded that night.
I thought it was the league but either way, the Pats lost the Monday Night slot because of the outrageous behavior of the fans.
We had grown up in NYC and I had gotten tickets to the game as a surprise for my dad. Like I said right after the 3rd quarter started and the fans got so rowdy I told my dad we really had to leave. That was the last time I ever went to Foxboro for a game.
The game was on Oct. 18, 1976 and the final score was NEW ENGLAND 41, N.Y. Jets 7. True Namath was past his prime but the fans had no respect what ever for even seeing him play. They were too damn drunk. And the excuse was the temps were in the 20s that night and just about everyone in the stadium was sh*tfaced. I have always thought about the idiot behind us who was sitting naked on those metal benches. I hope when he stood up he left a patch of skin frozen to them.
I've been to football games at the old Yankee stadium, Shea, the meadowlands and tons of baseball games in lots of cities. But I've never seen worse fans or feared for my safety as that night. And I'll never go back.
