Wow. Great Gartner HP/Opteron link. I like these parts:
Hewlett-Packard (HP) has adopted Advanced Micro Devices' (AMD's) Opteron processor for its volume servers although HP has long used Intel's Xeon processor exclusively. Evaluate Opteron for your specific application needs.
[ I thought Elmer was telling us AMD couldn't manufacture K8 parts??? ]
Gartner believes that HP’s embrace of Opteron will create waves throughout the server industry by:
* Forcing IBM to broaden its commitment to Opteron
* Forcing Dell to take another look at this technology
* Spurring Intel to play its hand regarding its rumored “Yamhill” technology, which like Opteron, is allegedly a 32-bit processor with 64-bit extensions
* Creating confusion around the market opportunities for Itanium
And of course, Gartner is just a PR firm for hire... so who paid for this report? HP? AMD? Certainly not Intel!
