Prescott Compatibility Problems

Posted by Kyle 1:06 PM (CST)

While most of you would snap to this issue mighty quickly, there are plenty of your friends and family that would not. And probably a few IT managers out there that you know too that would benefit from this information. It seems that not all Pentium 4s boot at what clock speed they should on i865 and i875 motherboards.

"Many board manufacturers have designed their initial Intel® 865 and 875 chipset-based motherboards to previous platform guidelines. These motherboards may not meet the currently required processor electrical, mechanical, and thermal specifications. Some processors 3.20 GHz and above based on 90nm technology may only boot to 2.80 GHz. When this invalid configuration is detected, the processor will run at this slower frequency to reduce the chance of damage to the processor and/or motherboard."

We brought up the issues of Prescott having issues with motherboards back in December and it seems to be coming true, especially if Intel is posting notices about it.

"Today, however, most vendors are now shipping boards that comply with the new revised guidelines that do address the electrical, mechanical, and thermal specifications of these processors."

The simple fact of the matter is that all vendors are still not shipping Prescott compatible motherboards. We have two new ones right here on the testbench that prove so. We are still suggesting that the enthusiast is currently better off sticking with a Northwood CPU. There do not seem to be many Prescotts for sale anyway. Are we looking at another paper launch?
