Looks like Barcelona/Phenom don't have SSSE3 but does have SSE4A.
SSSE3 is just two handfuls of integer instructions. Perhaps AMD is betting that it can add them later. My guess is that many benchmarks haven't been coded to take advantage of SSSE3 and SSE4 (chips not out so only seeds could code and test) but should show additional improvements on integer tests. And tests which do a moderate amount of string processing. Intel needs to provide their own libraries (static and dynamic) for best performance. Microsoft is woefully slow on integrating chip performance improvements into their OS distributions.
