(AMD's VP, Randy) Allen says the first AMD quad-core chips will ship near year's end.

This is simply devastating if true.

I don't think this is right. In the context, I would suspect that the news story intended to imply that the first AMD quad core chips *for PCs* would ship near year's end. I gather this from the preceding paragraph, and besides, AMD has already said that Barcelona has been shipping to customers for more than a week. We'll see what ends up being available, and when. In the WSJ yesterday morning, there was a very funny quote from an HP exec about not knowing which Barcelona chips will be available at which times. And if HP doesn't know....
