#8557 RE: SemiconEng #8553

SemiconEng - On the other hand, if AMD gets it's butt kicked a few times in the process, I won't be crying over that at all.

AMD has chosen to compete with Intel in the x86 microprocessor market, and with that choice comes the benefits and consequences of competition.

If Intel is really going to introduce an x86-64 compatible product, this is extremely bad news for AMD. As wbmw mentioned on the AMD thread, this would eliminate any differentiation mind-share they have been able to achieve. The whole 64-bit concept as a product feature disappears as a selling point for AMD. As such, Opterons basically are relegated to Athlon MP replacements, and Intel maintains their Xeon marketshare. Status quo is re-established, and the whole Intel/AMD cycle continues.

In essence, Intel can basically say to AMD "thanks for establishing the x86-64 infrastructure - we'll take it from here."
