NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Shares of FTI Consulting Inc. (FCN) plunged as much as 40% to a 52-week low Wednesday after an exodus at the consulting firm put its ability to generate revenue and earnings in question.

The Annapolis, Md., consulting company said earlier a number of senior professionals at its finance/restructuring business were expected to depart, leading to reduction of revenue. The practice of the departing staff was expected to contribute up 21% of the company's 2004 Ebitda.

Janney Montgomery Scott LLC analyst Mayank Tandon expressed concern the departures would snowball and result in higher turnover. In addition, it creates uncertainties over the company's earning.

Tandon said he believes the current departures would take his 2004 earnings estimate down to $1.30 from $1.61.
