I know the ad server was down for a little yesterday. This might have something to do with it. I haven't experienced the same problem you have so it's hard to diagnose.

Those are ads that an advertiser wanted to run, so we obliged. They are not pop-up ads, but just another form of ad.

You can always subscribe to kill off all the ads.
