#22139 RE: HailMary #22117

HailMary -

I doubt we'll see $100 ASP anytime soon unless there is a major chip shortage affecting both Intel and AMD. Remember AMD is still selling 5-6 million regular Athlons at $70 or less even in Q4.

Keep in mind that the volume crossover for K8 over K7 is scheduled for late Q2. The mix changes drastically, starting now.

For low end contracts, AMD shows a socket 754 32-bit processor (I have no doubt it will be K8 based). Also, AMD is positioned to happily trade presence in the Celeron market for presence in the Xeon market. They may not need to go after new business in the low end, just fulfill existing contracts.

I think that is the plan - establish AMD in the mobile, high end desktop and x86 server markets. Go after volume when Fab 36 comes on line.

Meanwhile, there is always Via. Dan posted that IBM will be fabbing for them. Via's design is more attuned to the low end anyhow.
