looking forward to seeing first demos, presumably this fall
I hope so as well. Nehalem should be around tapeout or first silicon now, to allow adequate time for verification and tweaks for the new architecture to make the mid 2008 production timetable. Otilleni's "spectacular" comment implies that Intel may have seen first Nehalem silicon and it is looking clean and meeting the performance goals.
But when will Intel have a public demo ? Fall may be too early, since that will take away from the Penryn launch hoopla. Barcelona may continue to look sick for the rest of 2007, so no need for an early demo. So January 2008 may be the most the likely first public demo of Nehalem.
Nehalem is a family of different chips. What will be the lead Nehalem chip ? The quad core CSI versions, or something simpler ? The CSI versions is needed first to secure clear dominance in the multiscoket space where leadership is presenly in question.
