Penryn taped out late last year, and demoed products running on multiple operating systems shortly thereafter. It was a huge success.
No word yet on Nehalem tapeout, but I'm sure Intel will announce something close to the time it does. News of Nehalem would be a huge deal, PR wise, and I would presume that Intel will keep the date confidential until such time that it makes sense to announce.
Unlike AMD, Intel usually announces something when they have the goods to back it up. How many times has AMD "introduced" Phenom and Barcelona, only to lack even a working demo...? If Intel announces Nehalem, I bet they'll be showing something running on it. JMHO.
