There is a huge part of the west that is living a wholly artificial life by sucking up centuries worth of groundwater stored in the Ogallala Aquifer as though there were no tomorrow. And guess what? In not all that many more years, there really will be no tomorrow for them!

For a primer on water and the American west, I highly recommend Cadillac Desert: The American West and It's Disappearing Water by Marc Reisner.

For something specific to aquifers and groundwater, you can try Water Follies: Groundwater Pumping and the Fate of America's Fresh Waters

If you wind up fascinated by the history of the Bureau of Reclamation and the great dam era of American history, I highly recommend A Story That Stands Like a Dam: Glen Canyon and the Struggle for the Soul of the West by Russell Martin

If you get that far, you may as well grab a copy of Encounters with the Archdruid for an interesting chronicle of a trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon by the two main protagonists of the high noon showdown over the damming of Glen Canyon and the deal that saved the Grand Canyon from the same fate.

And finally, for a little equal time for the Army Corps of Engineers and those living in the Mississippi basins, grab a copy of The Control of Nature for an eye opening look at man's "management" of the waters of the Mississipi. (The Control of Nature and Adventures with the Archdruid are both by John McFee)

As a bonus, included in The Control of Nature is the story of the San Gabriel mountains and L.A. For anyone interested in the Santa Ana fires, or living anywhere in southern California, or especially the L.A. area, this book is a must.

The more you read and learn about water and water management both in the U.S. and globally, the more you'll be convinced at the wisdom of those who believe "water is a huge play" in the future. :-)
