O/T: I read 2 or 3 years ago the same hypothesis re coffee and the possible mechanisms of action. I have been a big consumer, daily, for over 30 years. As some of you may know, I have had HCV for some 19+ years.
Summation: This is not a controlled experiment, but, my liver biopsies remain relatively clean despite persistant high viral loads and elevated ALT/AST over the years. I cannot rule in or out any one protective factor, including genetics.
I continue to consume both caf and de-caf in quantity, along with other antioxidants running the full known spectrum of sources.
Don't know if it's the antioxidants or the caffeine and don't care (antioxidants have other benefits; love caffeine). Besides, coffee makes life worth living, eh?
Re coffee. I drink about 8 cups (black) a day and consume my share of alchohol. Thanks for contributing to the delinquency of a major. Now I know the counter balancing extends beyond the stimulant/depressant syndrome.
I'd be afraid to try a designer drug due to my addictive nature.
