randy, the only thing to do in such a situation is the old trial and error approach. Ideally, stick the base station on the middle floor -- midway between where you'll normally being using a computer upstairs and in the basement -- and give it a try.

What bootz said is usually true. I have used an AEBS in a two story house covering two floors, the pool area, and a guest house next to the pool. They work really well. The main determinate is how much of an open area there is between the rooms you need the coverage and each floor.

The good thing about the AEBS is that you can connect two together to increase your range. If one won't cover your whole house, you could purchase two and put them in range to each other to increase the overall coverage.
