I wish I could tell you exactly why, but the Lexmark printers can be pretty quirky. The other thing you can try is unplugging it completely for about an hour, then turning it back on to see if the memory in it gets reset.

Reinstalling the drivers from the web site again should clean up any software issues where the computer thinks you need a new cartridge or that you just inserted a new one.
