Paul, your basic premise is that AMD couldn't possibly make a deal with ATI soon enough before Intel copies the idea and sabotages it by getting ATI to do it for them instead. And for that reason, you conclude that it was a good idea for AMD to *buy* ATI as an entire company.

Wow. First let me say that your premise is probably the lamest one I've heard all year. Not to mention that AMD routinely makes deals with other businesses, including IBM, nVidia, and others, without having to buy these companies.

And second, it is possible to make deals in this industry that can be arranged before a competitor hears about it, copies it, and preempts any legally binding agreements. But that's about all the effort I'm willing to put into this silly little debate.
