I really doubt AMD would have done it any differently. It would have required them to swallow some pride and give up some autonomy in the joint venture, and that takes a change in character, not business tactics.

It's likely that the execs knew the risk but decided, "To hell with it. Let's just buy ATI. We'll put it on our credit card like we've done in the past!"

I still think the acquisition made sense from a technological perspective. I just assumed that AMD had a handle on the financial risks.

wbmw & DoU - If they'd done that, Intel could've just paid ATi more to do it for them instead. The purchase eliminated that option.
