Nope. Opteron is the logical successor to Xeon in that market. Runs all Xeon software (very well, too) and runs 64-bit. All Opteron needs is respected OEMs to support it, and that is (of course) happening.

HP is Intel's co-architect for IA64 and is pushing it hard across the entire computing spectrum from entry level workstation to 64 way commercial server...

I disagree. HP isn't pushing Opteron into the Xeon market, for good reason: They don't want to water down the value proposition of Itanium among their several big-iron product lines. They will counter any move that IBM makes and field competitive products, and this means Opteron in the Xeon market. HP and Intel are not the same company, and HP needs to respond to their own competitive needs.
