Ike,
This is most assuredly the work of Osama Bin Laden. I started a thread on SI called WWIII to discuss the threat. It has been quiet since 1999.
1. The highjackers were skilled pilots capable of flying 757's and its cockpit similar 767.
2. The AA aircraft that took off from Boston made a very quick veer for NY after taking off. The plane was under highjack control very quickly.
4. This was an infiltration that took considerable time to carry out, maybe 3 years.
5. Every American will need to think like a spy to notice what is different. I guarantee you that every Israeli and Palestinian are far more aware than almost every American.

Good comes out of all and this is a wake up call. Terrorist espionage has escalated from a single plane highjacking that threatened the lives of the individuals on board to a 767 missile that can destroy 10's of thousands of lives. The next step is an atomic bomb. The changes will be significant and America will respond with speed and authority.

I wrote yesterday soon after the attack that <For Laden US needs to see the activity out of his base in Afghanistan, if such a well coordinated destructive plan could have been carried out in broad day light this is failure of US intelligence, how could their destructive co-ordination could have continued which points me to satellites and other gear and CIA was unaware, this is absolutely an act of war and as such should be dealt as such by cornering these groups wherever they are and whatever is the cost, without this the cutting of the tentacles of such groups that can devastate US the life would be never the same.

Should US be more isolationists, no it should not, it is now clearly indicated that we are across the Atlantic are as much connected to the world as the world is to us. If this can succeed why could a Nuclear Bomb not make it way to US, I would think that Intelligence Agencies failed big time here. I would like USA to open up it communications and contacts by creating outposts and fringes where Islamic threat of extremism is increasing, US CIA operatives in key countries like Pakistan on the fringe of Afghanistan who could have forewarned such a attack are far less than what they were in cold wars and Afghan wars day. Afghan war never finished but we do not have operatives or local structure to infiltrate communication between the terrorist organizations. Allied relationships should be developed and Osama cutoff from moving out ASAP. The investigation will reveal the characters soon as passengers list will be helpful, the commonality of criminals background by cross reference will reveal the organization that has a hand in this, the profiles will be buried somewhere in CIA computers (unfortunately too late) >

Washington Post todays echos this <The evidence pointing to bin Laden was gathered following the attacks in a joint effort by the CIA and the FBI, with information from both domestic and overseas sources, a senior official said.

"It is more than just the analytical surmise that it would take an organization with incredible command and control capability, which bin Laden's has, to stage an attack like this," one U.S. official said. "There is other information that has been obtained after the attack against the World Trade Center pointing in the direction of bin Laden."

Unprecedented in scope and sophistication, the coordinated assault on the world's financial and political capitals caught the United States completely off guard – despite a massive intelligence and law-enforcement network devoted to detecting and thwarting such attacks. Focused largely on guarding against bombing threats to overseas targets, U.S. authorities concede they were ill-prepared for hijacked jetliners purposely crashed on American soil.

Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he was told in a briefing that electronic intercepts today showed "representatives affiliated with Osama bin Laden over the airwaves reporting that they had hit two targets." A senior intelligence official, who said bin Laden is a prime suspect, would not confirm Hatch's report of intercepts.

A U.S. official said efforts are being made to carefully scrutinize the passenger manifests on four airliners hijacked today in Boston, Newark, N.J., and Washington's Dulles International Airport. The official said that analysts had concluded that after an initial review, "there may be information linking some of the names on the manifests to bin Laden's organization.">
