Richard Suttemeier, the guy that I follow at RealMoney.com, has issued 2 warnings over the past several days. Today, he opined that the U.S. economy could see negative GDP for 2 consecutive years. That has not happened in a long time. I think he said it has happened three other times, 1947-48? 1929-1933, and I think the third time was in the early 1960's, but don't quote me. What he is saying is that we are going to be in deep trouble.
I blame Greenspan for this. He should have used the Fed to reign in the banks during the real-estate bubble. There wasn't much he could have done about the "irrational exuberance" in the stock market in 1999-2000, but there was plenty he could have done to stop the mindless lending. But, as I have learned, the "blame game" gets you nowhere. He is an old guy and lost his touch.
As I said earlier, poor Ben Bernanke. He is going to be the Herbert Hoover--the goat.
