Compaq and racksaver both use compaq 5304 controllers.
You are assuming that selling price and product cost are related. I think this is a faulty assumption. As a perilous analogy, how about AMD vs. Intel processors. Intel CPU's have a lower cost, yet sell for more.
:-) couldn't help myself...
As Elmer just posted on the INTC board, Racksaver just announced an Itanium server, so we might be able to get another racksaver cost vs. performance data point from this new product...

HialMary,

Xeon MP will get a boost to 4 MB L3, which helps a lot in database apps. As far as clock speed is concerned, the current generation Xeon MP doesn't have a lot of room left on 130nm. 3 GHz or 3.2 GHz is within the realm of possibilities. As far as Prescott generation server product, initial plan is only for Dual Processor version without L3, a little behind the desktop units. L3 version is planned for 2H 2004.

Opteron is currently in an excellent competitive position vs. Xeon, once 64 bit OS, database server and other apps should bring another significant boost.

With Sun as a customer, and some volume almost guaranteed, I think it will be possible for AMD to contemplate version of server product with more L2 in 2004 (on 90nm)
