Hunter did what?? The charge was tax evasion. He'd failed to pay taxes for several years; that was during the time he was the most messed up from his addictions.
And once he cleaned himself up, he paid the back taxes. The judge let him off with probation or something. And I think a fine. I wouldn't really call that a "sweetheart deal". Lawyers who were asked about it at the time said it was normal. The object in cases like those is to get the money owed.
