It doesn't. It's purely automatic, once you learn where the keys are. In grad school, I once had a summer job as a sort of secretary. One of the young women who worked there for real typed a mile a minute. And spoke to her boyfriend in French--they were Haitian--at the same time.

I'm somewhere between a hunt and peck and a touch typist. The red squiggles under my words remind to hunt more than rely on touch.
