Uri Berliner is obviously now a conservative, and probably always was, and it looks like a well organized setup to test NPR and like you commented, NPR may have failed.
They probably should have just let him rant and gave him space like NPR claims it does. So, if this was some sort of plan, it wouldn't have had the effect they were trying for.
Notice the attacks now on other employees of NPR and even berliners attack at the new boss.
berliner now puts his stuff on that other conservative site and is continuing his onslaught of NPR. Obviously he's not the only one.
