Just look at the tube it had a glow to it the low voltage electron emitter glowed when it released electrons to operate the vacuum tube it works the same way as the transistor but operated at 400 volts DC I fixed a few of them too but they were hybrids by the time I saw them late 60,s Era I believe hybrid mean part transistor and part tube.
