Does anyone know the reason for the pivoting from defense products and potential medical applications to just apparell? Is it because a blend of cotton and recombinant spider silk doesn't require as much silk?
I don't think the others are on the back burner so to speak. It is just that this is the info he wants to release for this week or two weeks. Hopefully every week now. He touches on the other areas in a general way.
While these blends are targeted for luxury and fashion wear, the Company remains focused on its development of technical applications for its spider silk materials in defensive textiles, composites, and performance apparel.
I think you will hear more about these areas in the near future. The pipeline of info appears to be full.

Most likely this is driven by market forces. KBLB is likely going to eventually announce a deal with someone. Keep in mind, and I'm sorry for driving this home so often, but we all know how Kim develops a story. We will know when we see it, and it will make sense when it happens.
I wouldn't call it a pivot...more like branching off. Companies change focus, while not abandoning original plans, and that is what Kim did in this PR as well. They are handling many interests and what they talk about today, doesn't change the past.
“This is just the first of many new materials we have planned that incorporate our revolutionary spider silk,” .....
I don’t think today’s announcement is any sort of pivot away from anything. To me it’s an advancement/update on the apparel pursuit they’ve had for quite some time.
They do have tens of millions of dollars in play with Kings/SpydaSilk so that might be a priority at this point, while other applications are advanced.
