ggwpq- I like your thinking! Brian Lian is normally a very data driven matter of fact CEO and usually reserved/conservative so that comment is a little bit of a reach for him. Of course I don't believe that the words "I'm NOT optimistic about the year ahead" have ever been spoken by any Biotech CEO ever with upcoming trials to readout so may he was required by the CEO biotech code to say he was "optimistic".
William Blair did a story on Brian back in September that I think is worthy of a look to gain perspective on Brian's background/approach. In this profile he says “I believe we’re in a good position with the results of our Phase 2 trials.” which has been his normal understated tone:
I think very highly of Brian. I believe him when he says he is optimistic. He has been very focused on VKTX being a lean organization and has been allocating capital wisely. Viking has been advancing their most promising compounds for many years and we shall see in the next 4 months how valuable the company really is (It has been a very long wait for me.). I’m "optimistic". But then again I'm a longtime Biotech investor and obligated to say that. 😊
