Who, exactly, did Iran help "put in power"? Are you thinking of Reagan? The freeing of the hostages--postponed until after Reagan's inauguration--didn't really have much to do with it. That was negotiated with the help of other parties. Carter lost mostly because inflation was rising into double digits.
The Shah had already been deposed, of course. While he wasn't popular in the States, either, the mullahs were even more disliked.
So it's really very hard to see where that remark is coming from.
