I had long ago looked into buying land in Playa Del Carmen....seemed awesome until I learned the government could take it away from you at any time.
Grand Cayman would probably be my island of choice now. Very stable government and not that many hurricanes.
I once asked about Jamaica land and the locals weren't happy with me.
