French cinematographers have an incredible eye. (Or maybe that's 'had' now. I am buried in the 20th Century) They are much softer than the technicolor, knock-'em-on-their-azz way of shooting employed by the Americans. The French (and older films) rely more on the story. Seems like current American films are based solely on special effects and a lot of sex. lol
