Steve the very first question asked was around what network connectivity will be used in the data Center that nvidia/ Msft are developing.
They will use copper, active copper cables as well as multi mode Fiber transceivers up to 50 meters based on VCSEL’s and over 50 meters they use single mode Fiber transceivers.
The Fiber transceivers are based on linear drive technology that nvidia has been developing with Macom for the last couple of years. Those transceivers eliminate the DSP which saves a fair bit of power.
Point is multiple technologies are to be used where they can save power and keep the data latency down.
The next step is neuro morphic computing. That will allow data transfer between the GPU’s /CPU’s and memory within a chip or between chips.
The rep from Microsoft stated the transferring of data between the memory and where it needs to be used is becoming a bottleneck.
One thing is for sure technology is continually evolving.
