Guy Clark wrote and originally sung the song in 2010 when he was around seventy years old. I think he was just looking back at both his life, and Hemmingway's and saying he respected ... the live hard die hard ... drink your whiskey, and live your life, straight up, do as much as you can... kinda life. Course I don't recall the song dealing much with the way Hemmingway ended his life...
