A bipartisan group of U.S. senators and representatives introduced legislation aimed at encouraging drugmakers to develop antibiotics and antifungal drugs to address a growing public-health threat.

…The proposed legislation would establish a committee of federal officials to decide in consultation with patients and doctors which new treatments approved by the Food and Drug Administration the federal government should purchase. Manufacturers could receive between $750 million and $3 billion for new drugs over several years. The drugs would be free to Medicare and Medicaid patients and veterans receiving health benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Similar proposed legislation failed to materialize in 2020 and 2021.
