OK last reply for me. Yes, the canals are long (but believe me they don't go on "forever".. they go to the Rhine which goes to the sea. The bridge or aqueduct or whatever you want to call it does not go on forever though it is only 900m long and at any one point in time it is only ever supporting the weight of the water(at maximum water depth).
