Interesting. My neighbor, who is in his early 30's and was raised in rural Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, told me a few years ago that his daughter had a play date with a friend. He wasn't sarcastic when he said it, but it was obvious he thought it was ridiculous. Parents and future parents need to watch reruns of "Leave it to Beaver". Beaver wandered around getting into trouble on a daily basis. And his father always helped him understand how he could have avoided his problems by talking to him after-the-fact. HOWEVER, there are very scary people preying on children in much greater numbers, I believe, than in the past.
The internet exacerbates their illness. That is the reason parents, especially in urban and suburban areas, don't let their children roam freely. Of course, pre-internet, there was the famous case of the Lyons girls who disappeared when going to a strip mall in Wheaton, Maryland. They were never found.
