Bogle reportedly got death threats from brokers due to his invention of the super low cost index fund. My first index fund was the Vanguard Total Market Index fund. It wasn't an ETF but a conventional mutual fund. It also exists in ETF form now as VTI.

"Can be traded intraday, just like a stock.
Has no minimum purchase requirement.
Has annual fees that are lower than most comparable mutual funds.
Are more tax efficient than a mutual fund."


I doubt many people recognized the tax advantages of ETFs at first, but those are important benefits too.
