Another way of looking at it is that the appellate court has jurisdiction over the trial court. It is the formal way of the appellate court sending the order to the trial court and basically telling them to abide by it. It doesn't seem to be very relevant right now because they affirmed the decision. However in cases where they overturn decisions, there has to be a formal process for the appellate court to serve and order the trial court to do something. This is the way they do it
