lol, no I think you're hung up on a stupid topic and are devoting more time to it than you should. This board, if you haven't noticed, is not a bunch of ancient philosophy scholars.

How about this? The search for knowledge/wisdom is ceaseless and not likely to be attained to one man's satisfaction in one lifetime. He who gets that is at least less stressed if not more wise.

Since most all about Plato and Socrates has become misty in recall i'll only say that Plato, though he didn't agree with all Socrates said, apparently respected his teacher greatly. Not sure if you know Socrates never wrote anything down. And various philosophers of the time took quite varying takes from his teachings.

I don't find the quote egomaniacal at all. You might wonder where the egotistical sense you get from it comes from. I've just always felt it is just a comment about how important any person should see themself as.
