Basic research is not the same as the “mundane” and highly regulated field of manufacturing. Memorial Sloan Kettering cannot do a major phase II or III clinical trial without working in a close collaboration with a major manufacturing partner any more than they can send someone to the moon without a rocket . The scope and breadth of their research labs, and their “non-profit” status are less relevant than their access to a wide range of patients from all demographic groups and their experience in running clinical trials.
