Maybe Buffet buys the patent (i.e. company) to prevent Tesla from eating into his GEICO customer base. It would be pocket change for him too, but it is not like him to invest in patents, he is not that sort of investor, but State Farm or another large insurance may do that. Tesla is betting on the driver based insurance premium and not controlling the patent could be an issue for them.
