The Massachusetts Cannabis Market Is On FIRE
EDITORIAL May 20, 2022 • 8:08 AM EDT
Last week, we published an article that highlighted the growth of the United States (US) cannabis market and are even more bullish on the industry after Massachusetts state officials reported that the state has sold more than $3 billion of recreational cannabis since the market opened in 2018.

While we find the headline number to be significant, we do not consider it to be the most compelling data point from the report. According to the Cannabis Control Commission (CCC), the amount of recreational cannabis sales in Massachusetts increased from $2 billion to $3 billion in approx. 8 months. On April 20th, the CCC reported almost $6 million of cannabis sales and this represents a more than $1 million increase when compared to April 20, 2021.

We believe the Massachusetts recreational cannabis market does not receive the attention it deserves and consider it to be one of the most attractive markets in the US. Since the state has issued a limited number of cannabis licenses, legal operators are well positioned to benefit from the growth of the market and believe our readers should be aware of this.

In 2021, Massachusetts sold more than $1.3 billion of cannabis products (according to the CCC) and we expect 2022 to be a record breaking year for the state. We are starting to notice a trend with states that have legalized recreational cannabis and want to highlight some of the key takeaways from our analysis.

Several states are generating more tax revenue from cannabis than alcohol
Some of the states that allow for the sale of recreational cannabis are reporting lower medical cannabis sales when compared to prior years
New recreational cannabis markets like Illinois and Arizona are selling more than $1 billion of cannabis products per year
So far this year, states are reporting much higher revenues when compared to 2021 and recreational cannabis has been the primary growth driver

States that allow for the sale of recreational cannabis are generating a significant amount of cannabis sales from out-of-state residents
From Arizona to Michigan, several states reported record monthly cannabis sales in March and April and we continued to have a bullish outlook on the US market. We believe the recent decline is overdone and will monitor how the cannabis sector continues to be impacted by overall market volatility.
