According to my Enrolled Agent and CPA team, the wash sale rule exists to prohibit or dissuade short-term trading of securities. The IRS benefits greatly when a non informed Trader purchases a stock then sells it at a loss only to purchase it back within 30 calendar days. This makes them completely ineligible to write off the loss against gains and that puts them at a higher tax bracket which in turn causes them to pay a shit ton more in taxes
