How long does that take and why is it a big deal? Is it cutting out some brokers?

To pull that off without a "seasoning period" the company has to be something special. Typically a company needs two full years of audited financials and trading on the OTC before they can uplist.

If they can get approved for a major public offer (I think it's over $40 million) then they can go straight there.

The logic is to get approved for that large of an offer would take some serious unwriting -- so you know it isn't a scam.
