First off, it reminded me of an observation attributed to Beatle John Lennon: Life is what happens to us while we make plans for the future.

There are contingencies over which we have some control. Still, despite our best efforts to plan for the worst, or the best, for that matter, the worst can be much worse than we can imagine. There are always events over which we have no control. Events can be truly tragic of the kind that leave us traumatized for the remainder of our lives.

On the flip side there are events that are serendipitous.

Maria Konnikova, who earned a doctorate in psychology from Harvard, took it upon herself to become a professional poker player. In her book about her experience as pro poker player she addressed the concept of luck. Lucky breaks can't be predicted, only acted upon, or, maybe not acted upon.
