#16513 RE: Techman #16509

Techman, both. Centrino is selling well, by most accounts. I wonder how many people with Centrinos (that really use the WiFi) put in a faster 11a or 11g WiFi adapter and disable the onboard 802.11b?

I have not seen so many Centrino commercials lately, and there was an Intel executive quoted widely about a month ago saying that the Centrino blitz may have been a bit of a mistake. IMO, not because of sales (which have been good) but rather because customers want a faster WiFi solution and have been pushing back at the OEMs. The Centrino branding may not have enough staying power to fuel the holiday season.

My sense is that Intel is changing the incentives so that OEMs can better bundle Pentium-M with 11b/g or 11a/b/g chipsets. Next year one would expect there will be a Centrino2 that has the faster support, but meanwhile Intel doesn't want to be at such a disadvantage going into the holiday season.

Edit: P4 Extremely Expensive Emergency Edition - pretty good! Nice pun on P4Es.
