A buyout is definitely a possibility...not to mention that quiet periods are often used with M&A situations. One I can think of relatively recently was the proposed acquisition of Humana by Aetna (before CVS bought Aetna). I believe there was a quiet period before the potential disclosure which raised Humana's share price due to the rumors.
