Hi Al, so here's a heartwarming story just in time for thanksgiving:

15 years ago I was working for an information technology services company in the DC area. I get an email telling me to go to our desktop services team to get my laptop upgraded.

So I go there and I noticed the technician assigned to give me the upgrade (who was African American) had a Boston accent. I grew up near Boston, so I asked where around Boston he was from. He said Roxbury, which is basically Boston's version of south Chicago.

So I asked how he ended up in DC, and he said all of his friends were either going to prison or getting shot, and he didn't want any part of that so he enlisted. And the army trained him to be a computer technician. When he told me this, I was literally holding back tears.

My company is very veteran friendly, as well as big on providing equal opportunity, so when he got out, my company hired him. I was so happy for the guy.
