Filing a patent application doesnt mean much in and of itself.

So they file a provisional patent which buys them one year to perfect it. Only after converting to a non provisional will they be subject to a USPTO examiners review. The patent application may already infringe many others and most likely do as their application should be as broad as possible.. wont know for quite some time.

If all goes well, a patent wouldnt be issued for probably 2-3 years.

Works out great for PCT as another carrot to dangle
